PSP Cracked?

It looks like we may have unsigned code on 1.5 and possibly 1.51 PSP’s soon. By all apearances a buffer overflow attack has been discovered that uses the “must update” EBOOT.PBP file. Magnus the Shadow has modified it in such a way as to act like a boot loader for homebrew software.

Here’s what he told psphacker.com
The .sfo file (PARAM FILE) in the .pbp can be altered to become a loader, but this can only be done through ELF scripting (Which I can’t exactly do). Once an ELF loader is written and replaces the You need to update window section of text i believe a Homebrew app can be run. most likely candidate to is the app Turbo Grafx 16, which will allow us launch other homebrew apps from the PSP!

This “loader” aparently makes no changes to your PSP.
To use it you must download the files from psphacker.com HERE
then place the file on your MSDUO under “PSP\GAME\HACK” then rename the .pbp to eboot.pbp

then

Go to the Game menu on your PSP then to Memory Stick and
Execute the file, you’ll receive an error message that the file is corrupted (that’s normal) press “O” then
press “X” it will then bring up the “you must update the ver.” window.

Even if this does turn out to be of no help in cracking the PSP here’s a quote from the Team Xecuter site (link)

We are not planning on making any kind of chip for the PSP – we dont think it will even need one – any hack we do will be free and given to the scene, solely because we like the PSP as a handheld and its a challenge. But let’s say it did need some kind of hardware hack – you’d still complain ? i wouldn’t think so.

Our current work involves busting the firmware – the firmware dumper is already working and there has good progress been made in booting games and also homebrew on different firmware versions (v1.5 etc). We are giving support and advice to other underground teams as well as receiving help ourelves – its an excellent “group” effort without anyone actually knowing about who or what is involved. Apologies if the odd spoiler we throw your way freaks one or two minds

Thanks to www.psphacks.net and psphacker.com for this info and thanks to Magnus the Shadow for discovering this

Systm Episode 1

Tonight at 8PM the first episode of Systm the new all tech vidcast by Kevin Rose. (I’d give full cred to everyone but the systm.org site is already down)
All episodes will be released free of charge, in a variety of formats (Theora, Xvid, WMV, H.264, PSP), wrapped in RSS (for vidcasting), and liscensed under the Creative Commons.

This release comes on the heels of Kevin announcing his release from his G$ (whoops did I hit shift by mistake?… well it seems fitting) er.. G4 contract. And it seems he’s going to be devoting his time to providing the good tech content we’d become used to from him. With his “DarkTips” on TechTV and The Broken.

from www.kevinrose.com

After several weeks of lawyer negotations with G4, they have agreed to release me from my contract. Friday May 27th 2005 marks my last day on the G4 network.

I’m leaving G4 so that I can focus on what I love most, in-depth tech content. Starting with today’s premiere release of our new tech HOW-TO show ‘Systm,’ we will begin to build a network of technology television programming from the ground up. While Systm and thebroken will be our two flagship shows, in time, we hope to add more shows to the schedule with former TechTV cast members you all know and love.

Good on ya Kevin.

We hope to see some great content from you and hope you all the success in the world to prove to these big media conglomerates that we actually DO want tech with our TV.

Here’s some ways you can help Systm and Kevin

How you can help –
– Spread the word: Post in message boards, blog about it, email/IM your friends. Let anyone and everyone know that tech programming is alive and well.

– Sign up for the newsletter: Ecourage your friends and family to sign up for the systm newsletter so that we can keep you up-to-date with all the latest happenings.

– Help us distribute: Keep your bittorrent lines open after you finished the download.

– Advertise: Get your product or service in front of thousands of geeks! Email: ads at systm dot org

– Donate: We are purchasing studio space in the next few weeks – help the fund!

When you “Star” a message in gmail it publishes it to your Galliana Blog.

The latest release of Galliana is V 0.3

Galliana v0.3 Features

* Replies to conversations are the “entry comments”
* Uses libgmailer (gmail-lite project) to connect to GMail
