My company has been anxiously awaiting Chrome's widgets for a long time. Up to now I have used 8 plugins and am plesantly surprised with the extensions. Mozilla Firefox has always lagged and the plugins are more stable than FF.

Chrome OS is just another rebranded Linux GUI, it would be much better if Google came up with an OS that would directly compete with Windows.

And we don't know if Google will built an OS that just boots up a browser. It might also be that Google uses a smart way to make their online products desktop app-like. For example, a lot of Twitter apps for Windows are made in Adobe Air, which acts somewhat like an executable website. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see ;)

To be fair, limiting traditional "desktop applications" doesn't have to be bad. Consider what you use your computer for: How much of that can't be done with web applications?

Google seems to be aiming for a web-centric OS, somewhere between personal computing and cloud computing. When the work is done in the cloud, there isn't as much requirement for raw power in a unit.

That's sort of where the netbook exists anyways, isn't it?

Interesting article, Liam. When you asked earlier about the importance of Chrome OS, I thought of this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/13/opinion/13cringely.html. It is kind of funny that Google and Microsoft compete like this though.
