Custom Linux install ISOs from Instalinux (built on LinuxCOE)

LinuxCOE is a powerful set of tools recently open sourced by Hewlett Packard including

  • A CGI-based network install image generator (System Designer)
  • A profile manager to store custom install images
  • A retrofit process to configure machines to use LinuxCOE processes for patch and package management

What is LinuxCOE System Designer?

Well according to HP’s page

LinuxCOE System Designer is a CGI-based web application that allows a user to create localized network boot images.”

What it actually does is allow you to create custom ISO files that you can use to do things like a hands free install or customize the optional packages that are installed or to perform a network install.

Instalinux has a great setup on their LinuxCOE System Designer site here

or if you’re feeling extra ambitious you can install the LinuxCOE System Designer yourself. Get it from SourceForge here
It’s a great way to get new users into linux and show them that it can be as easy to install and use as Windows.
